Grand River and 14th — Community Engagement
Designing Justice + Designing Spaces (2022—Present)

Designing Justice + Designing Spaces (DJDS) is leading the development of a social justice hub in Detroit at the corner of Grand River Blvd and 14th St. Envisioned as a center for restorative justice, local businesses, and community spaces, the development embodies the kind of infrastructure needed in a world without mass incarceration.

In my role as Community Engagement Manager, I coordinate the Community Activators Board—a seven-member group of Detroiters guiding the interim activations on the site and stewarding the project on the ground. This has included organizing pop-up events, coordinating a youth design-build project, and managing ongoing communications.

Sunrise Mall Specific Plan — Community Engagement
City of Citrus Heights (2019—2021)

Gensler worked with the City of Citrus Heights to create a Specific Plan—a planning document to guide redevelopment of a declining mall at the heart of the City. In my role as Community Engagement Lead, I led the development of the engagement strategy and the design of activities including community workshops, listening sessions, online presence, and virtual engagement.

Creating a memorable project brand was a key element of the engagement. “Sunrise Tomorrow: Reimagine the Heart of Citrus Heights” became the public face of the project—a more welcoming invitation than the official name “Sunrise Mall Specific Plan and EIR.”

The first community workshop in February 2020 drew 300+ participants together at the mall to co-design a vision for the site. Groups used provided game cards, stickers, and templates to build their ideal development, which helped identify community priorities for the plan. In 2020, the engagement strategy to focus on remote activities, including a virtual charrette, interactive website, and physical mailers.
